in consolation semifinals
By Drake Skleba
Six-foot- 6 senior F Marcus Greene’s putback of G Jerrold Ofiana’s missed free throw with 10 seconds left provided the final margin in the Sabres’ 45-42 consolation-round victory over Maine West Tuesday in the Wheeling Hardcourt Classic.
Greene scored all six of his points and made each of his three steals in the fourth quarter. Senior 6-foot-4 senior Marcus Lewis (17 points) and 6-foot-3 senior Derrick King (15 points, 10 rebounds) played major roles in the Streamwood win. King pulled down half of his rebounds in the decisive fourth quarter.
The Sabres (4-7) will continue their quest for the consolation title with a semifinal game versus Loyola at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Maine West worked the ball down the floor quickly in its bid for the game-tying three. Sophomore Conor Hart’s baseline attempt bounced off the rim at the buzzer.
The Warriors were led by 6-foot-3 junior G Odera Eneogwe, who had 14 points and nine rebounds. Hart chipped in with 11 points.
Maine West (3-8) will meet Kenwood at 10:30 Wednesday.
