By Drake Skleba
In a game that everyone thought would be the tournament championship matchup, Glenbrook South and top-seeded Hinsdale Central squared off for the consolation title.
Glenbrook South (13-3) , led by its 5-foot-11 junior F Kelly Minx, squeezed past Hinsdale Central 57-54.
Minx scored 18 points and grabbed seven boards for the Titans. Senior G Geena Campobasso had a quality game with 14 points for Glenbrook South.
"We played really well against a quality team," said Minx. "We played hard for 32 minutes. I played really well today and kept my composure against a bigger and stronger girl."
The Titans received some long-range shooting from senior G Allie Roemer, who nailed three treys.
"We played well together as a team and I contributed what I could to help us with this victory," said Roemer. "To win our last three games is good for us, heading into the new year."
The first half produced six lead changes and one tie as the Titans took a 25-24 lead at the half.
Minx had 10 at the break for the Titans. Hinsdale Central was led by 5-foot-8 junior G Maggie Brennan (20 points), who led the Red Devils with 14 points at the break.
Glenbrook South extended its lead to 38-35 after three quarters. Senior G Jannelle Flaws (10 points, six steals, four assists, three rebounds) picked up half her steals in the period to keep the Red Devils at bay.
"We really played great defense today," said Flaws. "I think we did a good job today against a quality team and their quality player Kokenis."
Minx took over the fourth quarter. She scored eight points and gave the Titans a 47-37 lead after a pair of free throws with 5:30 left in the game.
Hinsdale Central (10-4) rallied behind senior G Toni Kokenis (17 points, six steals), who scored eight fourth quarter points.
A Kokenis steal and old-fashioned three-point play brought the Devils within 53-46 with two minutes to go in the game.
With the score 57-51, Brennan buried her sixth trey of the game at the buzzer.
"Anytime you play a team with Toni Kokenis on it you will be in for a tough game," said Glenbrook South head coach Steve Weissenstein. "She is a great player and we knew it would be tough to stop her.
"This was a game I was hoping to be played in the championship. Anytime we can go 3-1 here it is good. Kelly Minx has been playing so well for us and really had a great game today."
