R-B's McGonagill works OT to beat York
By Drake Skleba
Riverside-Brookfield senior G Sean McGonagill scored all seven of the Bulldogs points in overtime. R-B's top dog scored 25 points overall to lead the Bulldogs past York 54-52 in overtime and to a 7:15 Tuesday semifinal date with Maine South (10-1).
The two teams played to a 47-47 tie for the first 32 minutes of this barn burner.
McGonagill opened the overtime with a three-point bomb at the 3:30 mark. York senior F Sam Cleary (12 points, three treys) buried a triple that tied the game at 50.
McGonagill answered at the 2:15 mark with his fourth three-point shot of the night for a 53-50 advantage.
R-B turned the ball over at the 1:10 mark. York held the ball and called time out with 47 seconds left. The Dukes misfired, but senior Sean Fendley (11 points) grabbed the rebound. The Dukes called time out again with 19 seconds left.
With 11.2 left, York's Fendley's three-point attempt missed and went out-of-bounds to R-B. McGonagill (25 points, seven rebounds, three steals) was fouled and hit one free throw before York senior Pete Coffin (five points) scored a two-point basket at the buzzer to end the game.
"In the first half my teammates were stepping up and I felt I wasn't contributing," said McGonagill. "In the second half I really came to play. I really had confidence in my shot and really played well."
The victorius Bulldogs received solid games from 6-foot-5 senior Terrence Reed (13 points, five rebounds; three blocked shots) and junior G Ryan Jackson (11 points).
"We all played well. Sean had a great game," said Reed. "I had a good game and I finally blocked some shots. Maine South beat us in the Hinsdale South Summer League Championship Game. We have a big rivalry with Maine South."
York (7-4) was led by 6-foot-3 junior G Will Sullivan, who scored 16 points.
