Sweet revenge! New Trier tops Glenbrook S.

By Drake Skleba

Back on December 4, host Glenbrook South defeated New Trier 69-67 in double overtime.

Junior forward Abbey Schmitt and sophomore guard Maggie Lyon did not forget the painful bus ride home from Glenview that December night. Schmitt scored 10 points in the fourth quarter and 22 for the game to lead New Trier to a 62-56 victory over Glenbrook South Friday night in Winnetka.

Lyon added 20 points to help the Trevians to this must-win game in the Central Suburban League South Division.

"This was great to beat them after they had beaten us in December," said Schmitt. "We really played well tonight. I had a good offensive game tonight, most of it coming from the free throw line. I had been struggling from the free throw line and I practiced very hard and my hard work paid off tonight."

The game was a close battle throughout the first quarter and a half. With 4 1/2 minutes left in the half Glenbrook South led 15-14. Then sophomore Lyon, who had not scored, nailed the first of two three-point shots to give the Trevians a 17-15 lead. The long-range shot ignited a 17-5 Trevians run that closed out the first half with New Trier ahead 31-20. Lyon scored 10 more points during the run.

"Prior to our last game I had been struggling with my shot," said Lyon. "I started hitting my shot and I really felt good out there tonight shooting the ball. This was a huge win for us. We really wanted revenge for our defeat in December."

Glenbrook South (14-5, 5-1) came out of the halftime dressing room on fire. Led by junior guard Ali Shaw (22 points, nine rebounds), the Titans went on a 13-2 run to close to 33-32 with 4:30 in the third quarter.

New Trier (17-3, 4-2) answered with a 12-2 run of its own. Junior guard Hayley Campbell sparked the move with five points on a trey and a two-point basket. The Trevians ended the third quarter with a 45-36 lead.

The fourth quarter was an individual shootout between Schmitt and Shaw. Shaw scored nine points in the fourth quarter to keep the Titans in the ballgame.

With 2:10 left in the game, Lyon hit a three-pointer to put the Trevians up 57-48. With 1:36 left Shaw answered with an old-fashioned three-point play to close the gap to 57-51. Schmitt nailed three free throws down the stretch to finish off the Titans.

New Trier's senior guard Molly Quirke added 11 points with three steals and three assists.

Glenbrook South received additional support from junior F Kelly Minx, who scored 10 points. Senior guards Jannelle Flaws
and Allie Roemer each scored nine points for the Titans. Flaws added seven steals for the Titans.

Niles West (19-4, 5-1), with its 61-51 win over Maine South Friday, moved into a first-place tie with Glenbrook South. West will invade Winnetka next Friday. On Friday, January 29, Niles West will host Glenbrook South. The next two weeks will certainly determine who will win the 2009-2010 Central Suburban League South Division title.

"My three leaders,Schmitt, Lyon and Quirke all had solid games for us tonight," said New Trier head coach Teri Rodgers. "We ran our offense well tonight. This was a big win for us in conference. Now if we can take care of business next week versus Niles West and get some help from Niles West versus Glenbrook South the following week, we can achieve one of our goals and win a share of the conference title."
