Palatine Pioneers Festival recap

Arlington 14, Deerpath 0

The Stallions improved to 2-0 with a 14-0 win over Deerpath.

Zach Niro scored the first try for the defending junior high champions. Liam Watters capped the game with a 75-yard run up the middle in the 50th minute.

"I think out ball movement and our communication ended up being the factor," said third-year coach Dan Bartlett. We're lucky to have a couple runners Watters and Edmond Hogan) that can really break the game line. When they get through we do a pretty good job of supporting them. So it's very fortunate to have guys that are willing to hit the game line like that.

Deerpath coach Tony Palbicke pointed to another Arlington strong point as a deciding factor.

"They were passing the ball pretty well," said Palbicke. "When you pass the ball real well like that off the set pieces, like the rucks and the mauls and the scrums, they had good forward movement. We were back on our heels, forced to make a lot of tackles. Fortunately our backs were pretty quick on the tackle and we stopped their really  solid winger Hogan. We kept him from scoring and that was no small feat.

"I felt our forwards were pretty evenly matched, but the backs for them were definitely the difference maker.

Tight head prop Matt Harmon was designated the Man of the Match for the second straight week for the Braves (1-1).

"He's a really big, strong kid. He plays physical and is really starting to show ideas about what to do when he's playing," said Palbicke. "He's just a monster. Ten, 12 tackles a game, he runs straight ahead, straight up the field."

Wing Will Belden got the Barbarians on the board early with a try off a scrum just outside 22 meters. A failed conversion kept the score at 5-0. Good rucking by both teams kept much of the play between the 22s. The Barbarians improved getting players in support position as the game progressed.

Commitment to the ruck led to consistent second-phase balls, which led to tries by flyhalf Gareth Jones and fullback Christian Musil. Mike Masterson showed his athleticism with five tries on the day. Jones made two of his conversion attempts, and solid tackling and good team defense helped keep the Pioneers out of the try zone. An overall good performance by the Barbarians at a great event hosted by the Palatine Pioneers.

The young Palatine side was up against it versus the Barbarians. The Pioneers showed strong desire and fought on despite early lapses. Palatine threatened to score in the final moments as time ran out.

The Pioneers named the Barbarians inside center their opponent’s Man of the Match.  For Palatine, Patrick Andriesen made his debut at scrum half and was named the Pioneers MVP.
