Montini tops Fenton for regional title
 

Each team advances 12 wrestlers to Antioch Sectional

BENSENVILLE -- Montini took its 14th-straight regional title with a powerful win Feb. 7 at Fenton.
 
The Broncos, who won an opening round state event for the 20th time in the past 21 seasons, bested outpointed second-place Fenton 264.5-217.5.
 
The winners sent 11 wrestlers to championship matches. Ten won their weight class.
 
Montini collected titles from: Real Woods at 106 pounds; Holden Heller at 113; Will Lewan at 120; Jimmy Pawelski at 126; Dylan Duncan at 132; Caleb Fortuna at 138; Vince Turk at 145; Luke Fortuna at 152; Xavier Montalvo at 182 and Michael Johnson at 285. Eddie Laviste was the runner-up at 160 and Robert Gannon took third at 220.
 
Fenton was clearly second best at the meet. The Bison outpaced third place finisher St. Francis by 79 points.
 
The hosts received championships from Joe Oweina at 160 and Juan Alfaro at 170. 
 
Bison runner-ups included: Corey Muniz (106); Antoine Bess (120); Ryan Mencini (126); Oscar Ledezma (138); Grayson Kaspar (152) and Rodrigo Castaneda (220). Manny Morales (113); Angel Nava (132); Ivan Rodriguez (182) and Isaiah Brock (285) took third place honors.
 
Numan Ayhan, of Glenbard South at 195, and Vinny Scaletta, of Ridgewood at 220, rounded out the remaining regional winners.
 
Montini and Fenton advanced 12 wrestlers to the Antioch Sectional on Feb. 14.

Dylan Duncan (33-5), of Montini, controls the legs of Glenbard South's Mike Bertone (23-10). Duncan captured the 132-pound title with a 21-6 tech fall.

 

Caleb Fortuna (15-15), of Montini, smothers Fenton's Oscar Ledezma en route to the 138-pound Fenton Regional title. Fortuna's 12-0 victory avenged his regional loss to Ledezma last year.

 

Grayson Kaspar (30-6, right), of Fenton, squares off for the 152-pound championship against Montini's Luke Fortuna (29-6). Fortuna took the title with a 16-6 win.

 

Joe Oweina (25-9), of Fenton, is covered by Montini's Eddie Laviste (8-10). Oweina claimed the regional championship with a 9-3 decision.
 

 

Xavier Montalvo (32-3) continued his dominance at 182 pounds. The University of Illinois-bound senior took down Lake View's Stefan Zuric (26-5) with a fall in 3:06.

 

Juan Alfaro (28-4) was all business for in the 170-pound championship bout. Alfaro coasted to the 20-5 tech fall win over David Johnson (13-20), of St. Francis. 

 

Real Woods (30-3, left), of Montini, locks up Corey Muniz (28-8), of Fenton, durimng their 106-pound Fenton Regional championship final. Woods won by fall.
