Can you feel it? You know; that gridiron madness that creeps up on you every year right about this time. If so, head over to Community Park in Addison, Illinois, and see if you can find a parking spot.

The Addison Cowboys have begun practicing for the up-coming season and a large number of parents blanket the sidelines watching every detail of practice. Yup, that gridiron madness is very contagious.

Hope springs eternal

By Drake Skleba

Wednesday an annual ritual that brings great joy to football fans began on practice fields throughout the state. The first day of football practice commenced at 563 Illinois high schools; from Galena to Cairo; from Zion to East Saint Louis; and all points in between.

From early workouts without pads, through the dreaded two-a-days, leading up to the final preparations for the opening game, Illinois’ gridiron warriors began toiling in the hot August sun.

Football up next for Premium Preps

On August 12 563 Illinois high school football teams begin their first day of practice. Each of those 563 unblemished football squads share a single dream. They all want to play for a state championship on Thanksgiving weekend in Memorial Stadium on the campus of the University of Illinois.

Drake Skleba will be there for the journey as Premium Preps' new high school correspondent. Drake will provide in-depth  game coverage of our Friday and Saturday game of the week. His reports will include: starting line ups; complete game statistics; a quarter-by-quarter game report; and post-game interviews with coaches, players and fans from both teams.

The sideline reports highlight Premium Preps' seven-day-a-week coverage which will include features like: The Coaches Corner, a weekly forum for the area's top head coaches; sophomore game coverage; and state rankings.

Drake will also blog about the big games statewide each week.

Big second half delivers one-point win

By Darryl Mellema

Forcing and taking advantage of mistakes, and then creating opportunities of their own, a Chicago Select squad squeaked out a 23-22 victory over the Windsor Boys School team on the Fourth of July at the Illinois Blaze Rugby Club’s grounds.

“We didn’t know what was going to happen with the rain and everything for those of us in the back line," Chicago Select player Matt Lancor said. “It’s nice to win, definitely.”

Rugby not the only thing on Windsor agenda

American hospitality showed no bounds as Chicago-area rugby players and their families hosted two teams of tourists from the Windsor Boys School in England.

Not only did the U.S. teams house, feed and provide some sightseeing for their visitors, they also somehow managed to arrange for some very British weather as well.

A middle school barnburner in Lemont

Arlington, Palatine co-op tied 31-31 with 90 seconds to play

By Gary Larsen

The wildest game played on Monday no doubt occurred on the elevated pitch in Lemont.

The Arlington Stallions ultimately topped the Palatine co-op squad, 41-31, in a middle school contest that was tied 31-31 with only 90 seconds left in regulation.

“I told you it would be a good one,” said Arlington coach Dan Bartlett.
