IHSA individual tournament underway

OPRF(3A), Montini (2A) and Shelbyville (1A) start hot

The action on the mats started early at Illinois High School Association individual state tournament Feb. 20 at the State Farm Center in Champaign.

The three-class tournament features 672 wrestlers from 254 schools.  Montini (2A), of Lombard, Oak Park-River Forest (3A) led the way with 12 wrestlers each. Plano (1A) followed with 10, Marmion (3A), of Aurora, and Marist (3A), of Chicago, each had nine.

Both Montini, and Crystal Lake Central (2A), with its contingent of seven wrestlers, went through the opening round without a loss.

In Class 1A, Shelbyville was the main topic of conversation. The Rams saw all six of their grapplers win to lead all 1A schools. They were followed closely by Mercer County (Aledo) with five entrants.

In Class 3A, each of the 91 schools had least one wrestler go down in defeat. OPRF won 11-of-12 bouts; Marist had 8-of-9 wrestlers win. Marmion won with seven-of-its-nine contestants.
