IHSA individual tournament
Friday afternoon report

By Ed Muniz

The 77th edition of the IHSA individual wrestling championships concluded its winners' bracket quarterfinal and wrestleback action this afternoon in Champaign.
The three-class competition, now in its sixth year, saw a bevy of thrills and disappointments.

Top-ranked Class 3A power Oak Park-River Forest had 10-of-its-12 wrestlers remaining. The Huskies won 7-of-10 quarterfinal bouts.

Marist and Marmion also had sizeable contingents remaining. The Redhawks, from Chicago, have seven wrestlers left in the competition, led by five in the semifinals. Three Marmion wrestlers advanced to the semifinals; five others will compete in the wrestlebacks.

Class 2A remained Montini's playground. All 12 Broncos remain in the competition, and 10 have a shot at a title.

The early Class 1A success for Shelbyville and Mercer County (Aledo), which advanced all their wrestlers, changed when they returned to the mats. Shelbyville has three alive in the winners' bracket, and two in wrestlebacks with one wrestler eliminated. Mercer County suffered a worse fate. Each of its five wrestlers lost and two saw their individual seasons end.

Twenty-three wrestlers remained alive for the chance to finish the season undefeated -- nine each in Class A and AA; and five in 3A.

Each division held the possibility for at least one title bout with unblemished contestants.

In Class A the match-ups would feature: Jarrid Braunagel (37-0), of Althoff, and Nelson Baker (40-0), of Byron, at 120; and Plano's Derrick Maisonet (47-0) and Riverdale's Terry White (26-0) at 195.

The other single A perfect post-quarterfinal wrestlers were: 132-pounder Josh Alber (42-0), of the Dakota co-op; Nate Jozsa (41-0), of the Argenta-Oreana co-op, at 138; 170-pounder Kyle Betourne (26-0), of Bishop McNamara; Brendan Menacher (39-0), of Monticello, at 182; and Douglas 220-pounder Terry Martin (32-0).

In Class AA, the potential for two perfect finals remained: at 138 between Randle Taborn (36-0), of Springfield, and Johnathan Gahagan (39-0), of St. Laurence; and at heavyweight between Tanner Farmer (34-0), of Highland, and Deuce Rachal (28-0), of Lindblom. Jabari Moody (35-0), the 106-pounder from Rich Central, 120-pound Kyle Akins (44-0), of Sycamore; 152-pounder Jose Champagne (28-0), of Marian Catholic, 160-pounder Garrett Sutton (42-0), of Richmond-Burton; and 182-pounder Harrison Williams (43-0), of Springfield, remained with a chance for perfection.

In Class 3A, Tyler Johnson (50-0), of Lockport, and Regis Durbin (39-0), of Lake Forest, could meet for the 195-pound title. The remaining peerless AAA performers were: 120-pounder Kris Williams (29-0), of Thornwood; 152-pounder Bryce Brill (43-0), of Mt. Carmel; and 170-pounder Bryce Gorman (43-0), of Lincoln-Way Central.

Semifinal rounds in all three classes were scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
