Mick Ruettiger was upbeat about his Neuqua Valley squad as it headed into Wednesday's Naperville quadrangular featuring District 203 and 204 squads.

And based on how his Wildcats performed against Naperville North and Naperville Central, he has every reason to be excited about the upcoming season.

Host Neuqua opened with a 54-13 victory over the Huskies and then followed that up with a 53-14 win over the Redhawks.

The Wildcats won 22 of their 28 matches against the District 203 teams, with seven of those coming by fall and three more by technical fall.

"I think it was a good start for us, especially since we have a lot of new kids in the lineup," Ruettiger said. "But the kids that we have back are very solid and the new kids in the lineup complement the veterans. We relied on everybody and we're going to have to rely on everyone as we go on.

"We know that we don't have a lineup of superstars, even though we have some elite kids. But we have some above-average kids who are going to develop throughout the year. They know that this is a team that could do a lot of damage in the long run, as well as get the individual accomplishments."

Neuqua received 2-0 showings from Matt Cavallaris (112), Julian Ochoa (125), Austin Barton (130), Adam Stine (135), Andy Spangler (140), Alex Cizek (145), Nick Proctor (160), Dan Burk (171), Alex Zozulia (189) and Mike Zozulia (215). Jackson Robinson (103) and Luke Pigott (152) earned splits.

The Wildcats kicked things off by winning eight straight matches to jump out to a 39-0 advantage over Naperville North.

Stine, Cizek and Proctor won with falls, Spangler, Pigott and Burk captured decisions and both Zozulias' picked up forfeit wins.

Cavallaris later added a pin and the Wildcats closed things out with a fall from Ochoa and a one-point triumph by Barton.

It was more of the same against Naperville Central. Neuqua won six of the first seven matches to claim a 31-3 lead.

Spangler and Cizek kicked things off with falls. Following a defeat, Proctor picked up a victory by disqualification.

Burk and Alex Zozulia then won major decisions and Mike Zozulia claimed a win by technical fall to build the 28-point advantage.

Robinson and Cavallaris later added wins by technical fall, Ochoa picked up a forfeit win and Barton and Stine ended things with decisions.

Proctor, who took third place at 145 at state a year ago and is ranked second at 160 this season, is excited about the upcoming campaign.

"We looked pretty solid tonight," he said. "We're ranked ninth in the state, which is about five down from last year, so we definitely have something to prove. I think we started off on a good note.

"We need to go out and earn the respect and we're on our way to doing that. This year I'm definitely going for the state title. I had a heartbreaking loss last year in the semifinals and I didn't like that."
